–First, how much should these two college experiences impact Joe’s life moving forward? In the New Testament, Jesus said, “He who is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone.” Once complete, the essay in hand, the Dean signed off and the issue went by the wayside, other than to remain on a RAP sheet, only to show up 16 years later. So, Joe did and the Dean requested that he write a “250-word essay detailing the proper way to go about obtaining a liquor license.” Off to court again, he was ordered by the judge to meet with the “Dean” at the University of Arizona and get him to sign off on his err of ways. Police were called or arrived for whatever reason and Joe was ticketed for “not having a liquor license,” as people at the party were drinking. Stapleton, now 22 years old, was among a group of friends who together threw a party near campus which included alcohol. Incident two took place on March 3, 2006. Joe said the entire experience took less than a minute and he walked out without any type of slap on the wrist. Joe, being that the vehicle was his, got a paper ticket for being a “minor in possession.”Īs a result, he subsequently appeared in court, explained his side of the incident as “being sober and driving friends home” to the judge. When the officer approached the car, he found that one of Joe’s passengers sitting in the backseat had a “bottle of Southern Comfort” in his lap. Again, completely sober, Stapleton “made an illegal left turn” and was stopped by police.
The first one according to Joe, who “does not drink and has never been drunk in his life, ever!” was when he was driving a couple of impaired friends home from a night out on the town. To be honest, he somewhat chuckled after I told him why we needed to talk, not because any of this is funny, but more because, as he said, “this is exactly why people shy away from running for public office.” Issues, like this, obviously make me uncomfortable because my job as a journalist is to then call Stapleton, whom I consider a friend, and ask him the uncomfortable questions related to the charges. The second one was three years later, dated March 3, 2006, and said “arrestee – liquor laws/other.” The first one, dated May 9, 2003, was when Joe was a 19-year-old college student at the University of Arizona and details the incident as “arrestee – liquor laws/minor in possession.” It goes on to detail, among other things, two arrests. The anonymous source also sent me a report from the Tucson Police Department, with the heading “ RAP Sheet,” and the name “ Stapleton, Joseph M.” underneath it.
